Carbon sequestration and storage in the built environment

چکیده

The increasing interest in bio-based construction materials has resulted the emergence of concept “buildings as a carbon sink”. Quantifying and comparing effects sequestration storage buildings from life cycle perspective involves evaluation flows processes taking place at different timescales across ecological, technological, economic domains. This scoping review sheds light on heterogeneous body approaches results relevant scientific literature past decade: 180 articles were reviewed following systematic search relevance-checking process. Contributions are evaluated based scale (material, building, building stock), mechanism (photosynthesis, carbonation) accounting methodology adopted to quantify global warming. majority works adopt static methods, with only few for dynamic over time, although more recent studies do tend recognise need assessment. A characterisation current future stock is still needed, substantial work remains be done validate theory sink mitigate climate change. Reports stored durable products mostly find cumulative that less than emissions fossil fuel use single year (ranging negligible 175%). Furthermore, net gains built environment can offset by losses forest carbon, benefits substitution wood sometimes overstated. Further adoption – best make contribution change mitigation context rapid progress decarbonisation.

Carbon storage and sequestration by urban trees in the USA.

Based on field data from 10 USA cities and national urban tree cover data, it is estimated that urban trees in the coterminous USA currently store 700 million tonnes of carbon ($14,300 million value) with a gross carbon sequestration rate of 22.8 million tC/yr ($460 million/year). Carbon storage within cities ranges from 1.2 million tC in New York, NY, to 19,300 tC in Jersey City, NJ. Regions w...

structural elements and the built environment

built environment does not “simply appear overnight, like a movie-set springing up on a vacant lot, but has to be produced”.thus, the first point in dealing with such an environment is considered to be the tracing of time in the evaluation of the city and keeping in mind that the whole is more than its parts. the last point becomes naturally understood when the process of city building is p...

Carbon storage and sequestration by trees in urban and community areas of the United States.

Carbon storage and sequestration by urban trees in the United States was quantified to assess the magnitude and role of urban forests in relation to climate change. Urban tree field data from 28 cities and 6 states were used to determine the average carbon density per unit of tree cover. These data were applied to statewide urban tree cover measurements to determine total urban forest carbon st...
